This is a still showing the gunshot flashes.

This is another still showing the killer, but this time it is in the mirror, this shot also adds tension as you can only jsut see him, and music is still playing at this point.

This is a still of the shot that slightly shows the killer, this shot adds good tension as it only slightly shows him and music is also playing at this point.

Typical Thriller Audience

Here are pictures of the typical audience for our thriller.

Foundation Production Thriller Evaluation

Foundation Production Thriller Evaluation

Our Task was to Film and edit the opening for a new thriller movie which we chose
the age category 15. We Chose the Age category 15 because our thriller didn’t actually show any weapons drugs or violence so we thought it was appropriate to categorise it as a 15, and we found out about the guidelines through the BBFC, which said on the website what is allowed to be showed in each category, we found that a 15 could contain strong violence and language, so we decided to categorise ours a 15 as we knew it would not go over the guidelines as we felt if we categorised it a 12 we could possibly go over it so to be safe we chose the category 15.
When making the thriller we had to consider what made a thriller a thriller and make sure we didn’t make a horror or something similar. We researched the thriller genre and found out that they are tense, although they are similar to horrors, thrillers tend to play with the mind more, and with thrillers you have to guess more what is going on as it usually doesn’t show it. The main conventions involved in a thriller are camera work(dark shots, close ups, extreme close ups, usually shots that do not give too much away) editing, lighting(usually dark so cannot see much), mise-en-scene ( depending on each thriller can be day to day things), sound (a lot of sounds to reveal thing as may not show it as could give too much away). These aspects were all involved in the thrillers we viewed which were Seven, No Country for Old Men and Psycho. Camera work was used well in all of these thrillers as they all had a lot of close ups and shots to create tension but not give too much away and make it a good thriller, so we tried to use camera work importantly when making our thriller using a range of shots to create tension, for example the part which the man walks into the room to get his wallet the shot just slightly shows the killer in the corner of the shot. We had to edit quite a lot after we had done the filming as there were a lot of jump shots and we had to add in some fades and stabilise it, also because in the thrillers we watched all the editing was good so we wanted to make our editing good and we edited in some slow motion scenes as we felt it would be good to add effect. Lighting was a very important part in our thriller as the gunshot scene we had to use lighting effectively to make it look good, we had to wait until it was dark to do this scene so that we could see the gunshot flash and also because with it being dark it was more tense, this was like the thriller seven as the lighting in it is very dark and you cannot see much but it makes it more effective, our lighting was like lighting in typical thrillers as it was dark. Our mise-en-scene was in a setting of an average slightly old house with the usual things a house would have in it, this was so we had it in a normal setting so that the lighting and the camera work added the tension instead of the mise-en-scene, Our mise-en-scene was like some typical thrillers for example psycho as we had day to day things in a normal environment.; We used sounds effectively as we did not have much narrative we had sounds such as the noise downstairs and the gunshots, this was to make it more effective and not give too much away so the audience is guessing and doesn’t know why this is happening, this was similar to no country for old men as it had a lot of gunshot sounds. Our narrative was quite like some of the scenes in the thriller psycho, as we had very little of it in the opening, we did this to add tension as we would use sounds to add the tension to this like the sound they hear downstairs and the gunshots.
The research we did on all these films and the thriller genre enabled us to create our opening as we got a good idea of what was to be involved in a thriller opening.
Our Thriller opening represents a well educated and quite wealthy social group as the actors used in our thriller opening are dressed smartly and the house and the mise-en-scene around the house they are acting in is a nice house making it the people in it look more wealthy, and because this is the typical audience we are aiming for. Here is a picture of what the typical audience would look like. In my research of thrillers I found that a lot of the characters in the film were usually around the same age range as there target audience, so within our thriller opening we used quite young actors as our target audience was quite young and the classification we gave the film was 15 which fits in with our target audience and also complies with the BBFC guidelines.
20th century fox is the film production company I researched as they have made many good thrillers such as James Bond, the Bourne films, Speed, Avatar, The X-Files and Die Hard. The company was founded in 1935. I would choose this institution to distribute my thriller because this company is very popular for making good thrillers so our production would fit in with them. The company also a lot of films involving crime, this is suitable as our thriller involved crime. Also another benefit of 20th century fox is that it is a global market.
The audience we would be aiming at mainly for our media product is young educated people but it could be for anyone aged around 15-50, and this is suitable with our 15 classification, we got this research through questionnaires but we also decided using research on the thriller genre and by deconstructing other thrillers we have watched and seeing there target audience. The BBFC ratings affected our target audience as we had to class our film, around the BBFC guidelines, but we thought a 15 would be appropriate because out thriller is more of a psychological crime thriller and you do not actually see the crimes or any violence and we did not include any bad language so we classed it 15 and this also fits in with our target audience, we found our target audience with our research and from our questionnaires.
We used conventions of the thriller genre in our production to attract our audience, the setting we used was dark as we filmed it at night, the house we used was quite an old house, and these things made it more tense, also the sounds and lighting we used was good as these conventions are the main things in our production that added affect and tension and these things would attract the audience. In our production the main things that will appeal to our audience is sound, mise-en-scene and camera work and this affected our production as some of our decisions for example camera shots and the mise-en-scene were based around our audience. The sound will appeal to them because we have sounds that you can’t tell what they are, for example the noise they hear downstairs which leaves the audience guessing. The music in some of the scenes help to add tension. Also the main sounds are the gunshots as these are an important part as the audience know what is happening but cannot see so it adds effect as they are guessing which will appeal to the audience as it will make them want to keep watching. The mise-en-scene will appeal to the audience as it is in an average house so it will appeal to them because the house will be similar to the target audiences and all the mise-en-scene around the house will be more familiar to them and keep them interested. The camera work will appeal to the audience as there are a lot of different shots that add tension for example the shots that slightly show the killer and show the killer in the mirror. I want the audience to feel like it could be happen to them with the mise-en-scene and surrounding being similar to there own as we have targeted the audience with this, also with the characters being around the same age so this will engage them into the plot and make them want to watch more. I have met my audiences expectations with research of what people want in the thriller genre and what is involved in the thriller genre, and found that thrillers create a lot of tension and leaves the audience guessing, so I incorporated this when making my production, as it creates tension with the sounds that are heard and the camera shots that slightly show the killer, so it leaves the audience guessing as they do not know who the killer is. When doing this I made sure we didn’t put in too many gory scenes or strong language so that we could target the audience we wanted to, we used BBFC guidelines to help us which said about strong language, sex, violence and drugs and with this we chose the correct rating of 15 for our thriller which complied with our target audience and they also influenced some of the content of our thriller.
The Audiences reactions to our thriller were mixed, we used people of different ages and gender but mainly people in our class of a young age so this could have affected this. Some of the audience disliked that you cannot actually see the murder and that it is not gory enough, but our thriller is a psychological/crime thriller so we did not want to show the murder as it would not have be an physiologically effective, and also we wanted to get the right target audience so to make it a 15 classification we could not show too much violence or gore. They also did not like some of the quality of the filming as when filming outside at night the picture was grainy and this was down to the quality of the camera we could not edit this out and we had to film at night for the effect.
On the other hand some of them liked the fact it was more psychological and that it did not show the murder. They also said they liked how sounds and music was used in the production. They also liked the editing when there were scenes in slow motion. It met some of the viewer’s expectations but some of the views that were more into action thrillers it didn’t as they wanted more gore and more action.
I have learnt that it takes a lot of technology and editing to create and edit a film properly even for just a 2 minute opening it took us quite a while. I learnt a range of camera skills and shots including, extreme long shot, long shot, medium shot, close-up, extreme close-up, high level, low level, eye level. Birds eye view, over the shoulder etc. I have learnt a lot of editing skills as well, as our filming needed a lot of editing like for unstable shots but it was quite easy once I had got used to using the apple Mac and I learned new skills when using that like stabilising shots, using slow motion, adding sounds and music, adding titles and credits to it. I also learnt skills using I Movie like burning a film to a DVD and including a title screen. The issues we had when editing were firstly getting used to how to work the apple macs but when I was used to them it was fine, also we had issues with the quality of the camera in the low light as we could not edit the grainy picture out. But generally with the rest of the editing it went well.
My editing and filming skills have developed since the preliminary task as the preliminary task showed a lot of weaknesses with our filming and editing. In our preliminary task we left it too late until the deadline and rushed it and had little time to get a lot of filming which meant we were limited when editing and had to make the most of what we had, although I think we managed to make it ok considering how limited we were. From this I learnt that we need to make sure we leave a lot more time for the filming and editing. Also that we need to plan it more before we go and do it being more specific with what camera shots we are going to use, and spend more time on editing. We changed our mind on what pitch for our thriller we were going to do pretty late as we decided the pitch that we originally had chosen was going to be too complicated to do, and would involve weapons and violence to make it good which we were not allowed to do to an extent, So we decided to do a different pitch but with some ideas incorporated from the original pitch. We encountered quite a lot of problems when doing the task, mainly with technology. Firstly we found it hard to get good camera quality in the low light we were working in so we had to slightly brighten it when edititing it but the picture was still very grainy, and because we had a lot of filming we had alot to editing to cut out everything we didn’t want and string it together. I have learnt that even for just a 2 minute opening there is alot of filming and editing to do to make it right. If I were to do the project again I would do some things differently, firstly I would make sure I allow alot more time for filming and editing so that whilst editing if I needed some addition filming I could go back and film some more, which this time I did not have time to do. I thought we worked well as a group as we all agreed with each others ideas, my role was mainly the camera man, but we all chipped in when editing.
